Tottenham Court Road was not designed to cope with the almost 150,000 passengers that now pass through the station every day. With the expected rise in passenger numbers to increase further with the arrival of Crossrail in 2018, the station is being upgraded to meet the expected rise in demand. Crossrail is working alongside TfL on the station’s £1billion transformation – the biggest transport investment in the West End for years.
Alongside the upgrade of the existing Tube station and a new Crossrail station, the London Underground and Crossrail plans will include a new public piazza around the regenerating Centre Point, the first new West End theatre in over a decade, and 500,000 sq. ft. of retail, office and residential space. Residents of Hanway Gardens will be part of this outstanding transformation as the eastern end of Oxford Street becomes the new focal point of the capital’s West End.
“Crossrail will revolutionise east-west transit in the capital.” Boris Johnson
